His obituary-
THOMAS B. BARLOW, 87:- Wednesday, September 28, 1983

Thomas B. Barlow, 87, a former Trenton official and a pioneer in popularizing professional basketball, died Monday at Leisure Village, a retirement community near Lakehurst, N.J.

Mr. Barlow was acknowledged as basketball's first star. Two years ago, he was named to basketball's Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. He was a member of the first professional basketball squad to barnstorm the East and Midwest, challenging local teams as they traveled.

Mr. Barlow was a featured player on promoter Eddie Gottlieb's original Philadelphia Warriors, at that time recognized as the top professional team in the United States.

Interest in the sport grew as the crowds grew and promoters joined the sport, taking Mr. Barlow and his teammates to New York. They played in the first basketball game staged in New York's Madison Square Garden, in 1926.

The auditorium was crowded after New Yorkers got a look at the Garden's marquee. It read: "Tom 'Cave Man' Barlow vs. Original Celtics."

At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, he was considered one of the roughest, toughest men in the sport. Sportswriters of the era labeled him the "Babe Ruth of basketball.

In addition to the Warriors, Mr. Barlow played with several other Gottlieb teams during the 1920s and early '30s, including the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association squad.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; a son, Thomas Jr.; a daughter, Barbara Lipton, and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night, but the funeral was tentatively scheduled for Friday.

M. William Murphy Funeral Home, Hamilton-Township, is in charge of arrangements.
