Second Lieutenant La Pia was the pilot of B-24E Liberator #42-7012, serving with the 459th Bomb Squadron, 330th Bomb Group, at Alamogordo Army Air Base, New Mexico. He was one of eight airmen who were killed when the bomber crashed attempting to return to the airfield with an engine on fire, three miles west of the airfield, March 2, 1943.
