Son of James Highland and Maria Hinkle per death certificate. This is consistent with family records of James W. Highland and Mariah Hinkle. John R. was one of 15 known children of James and Mariah. Various children as adults lived in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. The surname was spelled Highland or Hiland, by different siblings.

By order of birth, the brothers and sisters of John R. are as follows (with married names in parentheses:

HIGHLANDS

John A. Highland, aged about sixty-seven years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas McCarthy, in the Tarr Building on Main Street,Thursday afternoon, following a several days illness from paralysis of the brain.

Deceased was a widower, and was a well know carpenter. Mr. Highland formerly resided near Little Rock, and was a son of the late Mr. James Highland of Bourbon. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas McCarthy, of Paris with whom he resided, and Mrs. Mathew McCarthy, of Little Rock, and one son, Mr. John Highland, Jr., of Bath County.

The remains will be taken to East Union, in Nicholas county, for burial, the funeral cortege will leave Paris this morning at five oclock.

Transcribed by Vernon Threlkeld from microfilm at the Seattle Public Library, Seattle WA. The middle initial “A” is correctly “R” from numerous other records. The marriage surnames of his daughters was “McCarty.” The transcriber is a great-grandson of the subject’s brother, Marcus Taylor Hiland.”
