1870 census shows the Grant family living in San Francisco where John Grant was a Stone Mason. There were seven children, with George being one of the two youngest: Sophia (17), John (15), Ella (9), William (7), Charles (5), Josephine (3) and George (3)
1880 census shows the family living on South Park Avenue in San Francisco. Sophia had moved out and John had passed away. Augusta was the only parent left, with six children.
On July 4, 1898, George enlisted in the military. Records indicate he was 5'7" tall, had brown eyes, black hair and a dark complexion. He was discharged on April 11, 1899 after being AWOL.
1890 census shows George as a home owner near the marble quarry in Columbia, CA. He was a miner and had three other miners boarding with him.
1910 census shows George married to Adele L. Grant. The childless couple had been married four years and were living in Columbia, CA. George was still a miner, but had also been a farmer earlier.
1920 census shows Adele renting a room on Shenandoah Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri. It is not known where George lived at this time. Adele was still listed as married, but not living with her husband. She was a teacher of botanical studies.
1930 census shows George, living with his brother William, in San Francisco. George was divorced and working as a miner. He later returned to Columbia where he continued mining and eventually retired.
George was registered as a Democrat, except for a brief period when he was registered with the Progressive Party. He once held the public office of Deputy Game Commissioner.
