Mr. Johnny Randolph Oliver, 67, died at his residence on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Baptist Church with interment to follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Pastors Paul Stewart, Lloyd Taylor and Devy Nanlohy will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Frank Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Mr. Oliver was one of eight children born to the late Roscoe and Ruth Stamper Oliver in Ashe County. He attended Ashe Central High School and served as captain of the basketball and football teams. John served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. When he returned from the war he met Linda Ashley. They celebrated their forty-fourth year of marriage in December of 2012. He owned "Yes Construction" from 1972 until his retirement in 1999. Mr. Oliver has been a member of Immanuel Baptist Church since 1969 where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, served with the Word of Life group among other activities. His church family was only second in importance after his family at home. Mr. Oliver will be remembered as a hard worker who encouraged his children to learn from their mistakes but keep on trying. He loved to play practical jokes and was a very caring individual. There are numerous people who will never know who performed the random act of kindness in their life because he was not a person who wanted any credit, but only wanted to make someone else's life richer. He was a loving, supportive, husband, father, grandfather, sibling and friend. Many patrons at Pete's restaurant will remember him and his passion for the banana pudding. He is survived by his wife, Linda Ashley Oliver; children, J.J. Oliver and girlfriend Melissa Folta and Anna Oliver Balser and husband Doug; grandchildren, Brenton and Kaci Balser; brothers, Jerry and Jay Oliver; sister, Judy Miller and husband Reed; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Joe, Jack, Jimmy and Jeff Oliver. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Disabled American Veterans, POB 14301 Cincinnati, OH 42250 or at www.dav.org.
