James Dean Hansen, 83, returned home to his Heavenly Father and was reunited with his sweet wife, Uela, on January 15, 2013. At the time of his death, he was living at his home, in the care of his loving daughters.

Dean was born April 30, 1929 in Hiko, Nevada to James Alfred and Jewel Evelyn (Schofield). He was the second of six children.

The little ranch where he was born and raised was humble and there Dean was taught a love for his fellow man and the value of hard work.

He graduated from Pahranagat Valley High School, Alamo, Nevada. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, in Agricultural Education. He returned to teach at Pahranagat Valley High School.

Dean honored his country by accepting a military draft into the U.S. Army. He later survived the rigors of Officer Candidate School and served in the Army for two years as a 2nd Lieutenant.

While serving in the military he met and married Perrella Pressley on March 31, 1956. They solemnized their marriage in the Salt Lake City temple on November 14, 1956.

In 1957, he started a master's degree in Plant Pathology & Agronomy at Auburn University.

He and Perrella had 5 children together and suffered the heartbreak of losing their second child, Anna Marie, in her infancy. Although they eventually divorced, their mutual admiration continued until the time of his death.

Dean went on to marry Uela May Hunting on June 19, 1968 in the St. George Temple. They resided in Beltsville, Maryland for 20 years. During that time, they had nine children.

Dean worked for the Environmental Protection Agency for 24 years, specializing in international common names for plant disease.

In 1989, he retired, moved to Vernal, Utah and took up farming full-time.

Dean and Uela were married for 41 years. They traveled all over the country with their children, primarily by car, and took their children to many of this nation's national parks.

Love and work were themes of their marriage. They shared many hours together in the garden.

They were both devoted to church service and ultimately served a full-time mission to Mississippi, together.

Although Dean never completed a doctorate, he was often mistakenly addressed as "Dr. Hansen," because of the extensive work he had done in the area of plant pathology. He was well published in his field and for a year after his retirement he was still collaborating on studies and works published by the Phytopathological Society.

Even though he had a respected status in his professional life, he never considered himself to be too good for any type of work, no matter how lowly it may have seemed. After his retirement, he worked a seasonal job as a janitor at the Field House of Natural History, Vernal Utah, for many years.

Dean had a great understanding of the scriptures. He was known among his friends and associates as a bit of a scripture scholar. He had a wonderful memory and ability to recall and quote scriptures, whenever it was needed. He served for many years as a temple worker in both the Washington D.C. temple and the Vernal Utah temple.

Dean had beautiful penmanship. His handwritten notes are a treasure to many.

Up until the time that Parkinson's disease took away his mobility, he could work any man into the ground.

He had a great love for animals and a very green thumb. He made great effort of cattle farming in the suburbs of Washington D.C. but found too many obstacles. He settled with having a very large garden that he shared the fruits of with many people.

After moving to Vernal, and with the assistance of his children, he was able to turn a 40 acre patch of desert into a flourishing alfalfa field. He also had a small herd of cattle, which he raised on that alfalfa, and milk cows that he milked morning and night for many years.

Dean had a great love for his fellow man and was always looking for ways to serve them. Dean was a father who loved his children very much. The greatest gifts he felt he could give his children were the love of the gospel and the ability to work hard.

His skill of being able to make the desert blossom will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Matthew (Jean), Mark (Chris), Janice (Norman Ferrell-deceased), Timothy (Andrea-divorced), Evelyn (Brad Grammer), Sarah (Daniel John), Uel (Amber), James (Doris), Jewel (Peter Tibbett), John (Marlee), Mary (Ben Hacking), Pearl (Jent Sheffer), and Nathan (Amanda). Dean has 59 grandchildren with three on the way, and 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way. Two of his sons have served in the military. Seven of his children fulfilled full-time missions for the church. He is also survived by his other sweetheart Perrella Pressley Flynn and his siblings Alfred, Edward, Darrel, and Marie.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Uela May Hunting Hansen, his oldest daughter, Anna Marie Hansen, his parents James Alfred Hansen and Jewel Evelyn Schofield, his sister Jean Hansen Newell, his sister-in-law Barbara Marsing Hansen, and his son-in-law Norman Wilson Ferrell.
