In his youth, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined St. James AME Church. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, where he attended Scott's Branch High School. He was employed with Horton Farms.
Survivors are two daughters, Donna Nelson of Miami, Fla., and Casey Nelson of Manning; two sisters, Jannie Gamble and Ethel Singleton, both of Manning; six brothers, retired Sgt. Maj. Jerry (Yvette) Nelson of Albany, Ga., and Thomas, Willie, Leroy, Stephen and Joel (Keisha) Nelson, all of Manning; two aunts, Fannie (Henry) Cubbage and Deloris Canty; two uncles, Johnson Pringle and James (Daisy) Pringle; and two grandsons.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon with services at 1 p.m. Thursday at 2073 Greenall Road, Potato Creek section of Summerton, with the Rev. James Chattine, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Historic Mt. Zion AME Church cemetery.
