This old cemetery was deeded to the East Bernard Burying Community by Lemuel Linder Johnston, my husband's ancestor and it was on his land at that time. It was then called the Holub Cemetery and is now called the Stafford Cemetery. Known graves of his ancestors buried there are: Hope Hull Cooper, born 1814; d. 1876 and his granddaughter, Sally Cooper Johnston, b. 1863; d. 1884. Also buried there with a stone is the child of Lemuel Linder Johnston and wife, Redden Staggers. There may be other graves of his ancestors but are probably buried under leaves and soil from the river flooding over the years.
The cemetery was cleaned up at one time by the Boy Scouts but is now in horrendous condition with fallen trees and debris throughout. We are of advanced age and unable to clean it up. Can your people locate the scouts to clean it up again? It can only be reached through a locked gate as it is on private property (even though it is a public cemetery per the deed I mentioned)
please check this old cemetery out and see if you can get it cleared up Thank you. Mary Pearson [email protected]
