Roberta Pierce Mason
"wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend … "
Roberta Pierce Mason, 83, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 14, 2013, in Bountiful, Utah. She taught us much as she endured the effects of Alzheimer's Disease and the associated struggles that accompanied this time in her life. She didn't remember her children and grandchildren the last few years, but we knew and loved her, and counted it a privilege to care for her - in an effort to pay back some of the care she so lovingly gave to us.
Roberta was born September 21, 1929, in Wellington, Utah, to Murry Elton and Thelma Ruth Worley Pierce, the 4th of 17 children. Her twin brother, Robert, passed away within days of his birth. She married Stanton Heath Mason March 15, 1954, in Elko, Nevada, and together they raised five children. Stan passed away in 2003.
She is survived by her children: Sandra Mason, Betsy (Ken) Sacco, Vicki (Randy) Blaylock, Kolene (Howard) McMurdie, and Robert (Stephanie) Mason, and grandchildren: Morgan, Tyler, Jared, Spencer, Sean, Amber, Lindsay, Wes, Mitchell, Conrad, Richard, Samantha, Kathy, Stan, and Courtney. She was preceded in death by her oldest sister Leora Atwood, and granddaughter Kasey Ann Sacco.
She is survived by a large, extended family of siblings and companions: Merlynne Foster & Dorothy Pierce (Howard, deceased), Marilyn Pierce (Klebe, deceased), Elaine Pierce, Ellis (Cindy) Pierce, Rayma (Doug) Cranford, Jo Pappas (Ted, deceased), Joyce Pierce (Murry, deceased), Asay (Arlette) Pierce, Ward (Patti) Pierce, and Ben Pierce (Connie, deceased), brother-in-law Todd (LaVon) Mason, and sisters-in-law, Winona Rice and Allie Dee Pierce, and many nieces and nephews.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served mostly in the Primary and Relief Society organizations. She will be remembered for her love of children and all the recipes and goodies she shared with the Relief Society sisters at the monthly homemaking meetings. She was a kind person who always thought of others and was always doing something for her neighbors, friends, and family - and even people she didn't know. She learned to quilt and spent many hours quilting with her Relief Society sisters and friends. She volunteered at the Glendale Elementary School for many years helping children learn to read.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Cannon 4th Ward, 1301 South 1200 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street, Midvale, Utah, and one hour (11:00 a.m.) prior to the funeral services. Interment will be in the Bluffdale City Cemetery.
The Mason family expresses their love and appreciation to all of the staff at Heritage Place in Bountiful, Utah, for the excellent care provided to mother. She was in the care center for over 5 years and all of us were blessed by those who cared for and loved our mother - especially the CNA's who daily provided extra-loving care. Special thanks also to: Dr. Alexander Del Castillo, St. Marks Hospital Senior Care; Dr. Mark A. Cacciamani and Dr. Mina Gohari, and recently Dr. Shane Young; and the wonderful people at Encompass Home Health Care and Hospice for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Encompass Home Health Care and Hospice in her name.
