EDGAR LUEDTKE

SAD TRAGEDY
A terrible tragedy occurred at the Robt. Luedtke farm south of this city last Monday morning when the twenty year old son, Edgar met his untimely death through a dynamite explosion. The boy and his father were engaged in clearing the channel of a small creek that crosses the farm and were using dynamite to clear away obstructions. The young man was placing the dynamite while the father was working nearby. The ground here was quite water-soaked. Edgar had just gotten a charge ready and his father standing at some distance, had turned his back to walk further away when the explosion occurred and at the same time he heard a scream. Turning about the lifting smoke revealed to him the mutilate body of his son lying near the spot where the dynamite had been planted. The boy must have died almost instantly, lying so near the discharged dynamite. One boot remaining imbedded in the mud gives rise to the belief that when starting to leave the spot the boy's foot became stuck in the mud and held him long enough to receive the full force of the explosion.
Dr. J. A. Schmidt was immediately summoned and on account of the condition of the body undertaker Luecker was also called and the remains taken to the undertaking establishment instead of to the home, until they could be prepared for the casket. The whole side of the body was horribly mutilated and his lower jaw torn away. No inquest was held in the case as the circumstances clearly indicated the accidental cause of death.
The deceased was born in the town of Rockland in 1908. His parents purchased the Hy. Schaubs farm about a year ago and the boy was a great helpmeet to his hard working parents and would probably have chosen farming for his life vocation. The parents and family are receiving the deepest sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
Besides the parents, Edgar is survived by four brothers, Herman and Henry of Rantoul, Robert of Rockland and Albert at home. Also two sisters, Mrs. Martha Schaefer and Mrs. Emma Paul both of Rantoul.
He was an active member of the Lutheran Church here. The funeral took place at the Lutheran Church services being conducted by Re. M. Sauer.
