ALBERT BEHNKE

Albert Behnke, one of our venerable townsmen died at his home here last Friday at the age of eighty-one years.
The deceased was born in Germany in 1843 and came to America with his parents in 1853, the family settling at Watertown where they lived for two years, then removed to a farm in the town of Rockland.
In 1869 Mr. Behnke was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Kroening. In 1890 he removed with his family to this city which has been their home since that time. In company with his sons, he has for many years been interested in the lumbering business owning establishments in various points of the state. In recent years however, the old gentleman has led a somewhat retired life, contenting himself with the comforting presence of his loyal wife and children, two of whom reside in our city. Before the sad accident which resulted in the amputation of one foot, we remember Mr. Behnke as an extremely active man and even under that affliction bore himself with the cheerful fortitude of a courageous man, the type of man developed by combat with the wildness in which his youthful days were spent.
Mr. and Mrs. Behnke have been worthy citizens of our city and to the bereaved widow and children the sympathy of the community is extended. The decedent besides other community activities, also served as village trustee.
He is survived by eight sons and one daughter, Miss Alice of Milwaukee. The sons are Richard of Milwaukee, Arthur of St. Louis, Mo., Willie and Henry of Minneapolis, Minn., Otto of Long lake, Wis., Emil of Oshkosh, John and Bernard of Brillion.
The funeral took place on Tuesday, services being conducted by Rev. M. Sauer at the Lutheran Church in this city.
