Leslie Claybourne Coombs, 87, of Camarillo died Monday, January 28, 2002 following a brief illness.
Leslie was born June 13, 1914 in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. Was a resident of Camarillo and Thousand Oaks for the past 38 years, coming from Burbank in 1963. Leslie grew up in Fairview, Utah where he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of Utah with a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering and earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the ROTC program. Upon graduation, instead of being commissioned it was determined that his expertise in engineering was needed in support of the war effort of World War II.
Leslie served his first full time mission for the Church at the age of 21 to France and Belgum for two and a half years. After his mission he returned home to Fairview, Utah and married the love of his life, Verna Briggs Coombs on Dec. 18, 1939 in the Manti Utah Temple. His second mission for the Church was with his wife to Scotland and Northern Ireland in 1980.
Leslie's career as an aeronautical engineer began in San Diego and continued to Texas and for 28 years he was with Lockheed in Burbank, CA. After his retirement in 1983 he did consulting work for various companies for approximately ten years.
Leslie was an avid golfer, tennis player and reader. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, working with his hands and service in the Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Verna of Camarillo; son and daughter-in-law Leslie Briant and Evone Coombs of Crystal Lake, Illinois; daughters and sons-in-law: Margaret Sue and Clifford Bursett of Camarillo, CA; Donna Lee and Joseph Corno of Orem, Utah; Joyce Ann and James Burdick of Wildomar, CA; Roberta Mae and Blaine Ostler of Billings, Montana; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his sister Esther Durfey of Bicknell, Utah. Leslie is preceded in death by his sisters: Dora Jacobs and Gladys Coombs and his parents Leslie McLean and Sarah Ellis Coombs.
Visitation will be Friday with the funeral service following on Friday, February 1, 2002 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ward Chapel, 4345 W. Los Posas Road, Camarillo.
Burial will follow at Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village. Assisting with funeral arrangements is Pierce Brothers Mortuary, 1075 East Daily Drive, Camarillo
