When David arrived in Vietnam 21 June 1968, he was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
The battalion was participating in Operation Lancaster when Bravo Company was engaged by hostile forces. David died during the fire fight as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire.
Survived by mother, Katheryn E Munsey of Pinellass Park, FL and his father; William Ballou of Lafayette, CA.
