She was the daughter of James E Hines and Catherine A Herty and came from a large family. Here siblings were Mary W Hines, James E Hines, Thomas Hines, Annie A Hines, and Florence Hines Tague. Her half-brother was Edward Hines.


She first married Robert E Turner in Cuyahoga County, Ohio ca. 1920. Together, they had one son, Lieutenant Allen Robert Turner, who was missing in action/killed in action during WWII. She married second to George Alexander Hoernle and they lived in Brookline, Massachusetts. She married third to Duncan Lothrop and they lived at Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

She enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps at Boston, Massachusetts, together on the same day with her son, Lt Allen R Turner. In their military training, they 'ran into' each other on at least two occasions while stateside, once at Denver, Colorado.

In her military life, she was better known as Lt Esther G Hines Hoernle.
