Russell Sturges Williamson, Sr., Decorated USMC Veteran and Iwo Jima Survivor, Russell Sturges Williamson, Sr., age 89, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Middletown Twp. Russell was a resident of the Thornbury Township section of Glen Mills for the last 49 years.
Born on November 23, 1923 in Philadelphia to the late Elmer Thomas Williamson and the late Jennie (nee Cummings) Williamson. He served his country proudly as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the 4th Marine Division, serving in Iwo Jima and wounded in action. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
Mr. Williamson had worked in the capacity of a painter, and was formerly employed by Boeing Inc. in Ridley Park, and had retired from there after 25 years of dedicated service. He was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church in Glen Mills, the Civilian Conservation Corps stationed in Flagstaff, AZ from January to June, 1940 and he enjoyed volunteering at the Helicopter Museum in West Chester.
He was the loving husband of 68 years to the late Lillian (nee Russo) Williamson, who recently passed away on October 24, 2012. Survivors: daughter Darlene V. Jackson of Glen Mills, sons Russell S. Williamson, Jr. (Carter) and Robert T. Williamson, both of Rogersville, TN; also surviving are his grandchildren Hope, Todd, Teal, Katherine and Daniel and his step-granddaughter Kartcher.
Visitation: Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm., the Nolan - Fidale Funeral Home, Ltd., 5980 Chichester Avenue, Aston, and on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 am., Saint John's Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Road, Glen Mills. Funeral service: 11:00 am, the Church. Burial: St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Glen Mills.
