Mr. Jack W. Dawson, 91, passed away January 13, 2013 surrounded by his family in his home in Westlake.
Jack Wade Dawson was the youngest of twelve children born to William F. and Amanda (Land) Dawson. He was born October 2, 1921 in Yale, Oklahoma, and was educated in schools in and near Bristow, Oklahoma and Mena, Arkansas. As a young man he owned and operated a salvage yard; a gas station on Route 66 west of Bristow, OK; and he farmed and raised and sold livestock. He married Ruth Polm in Bristow, OK on November 30, 1942. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Following World War II he was employed by Allied Refinery in Stroud, OK. In 1950 he began work at Continental Oil Company in Ponca City, OK. He was transferred in January 1953 to their Westlake, LA refinery from which he retired as an "A" operator with about 30 years service. Besides working at Conoco, he owned and operated Dawson Upholstery from 1958 until 1980. He refinished and reupholstered antiques as well as modern furniture.
While living in Maplewood in 1953 – 1954, he and his wife Ruth built their home in Magnolia Heights in Westlake. They were known for their successful vegetable gardens which they shared with their family, friends and neighbors. Mr. Dawson resided in Westlake since 1954 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Westlake. He retired from Continental Oil Company in 1980.
After retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling, working in their yard and gardens, and making artistic crafts which he gave to family and friends or sold at the annual downtown Branson craft sale.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Polm Dawson; three children: Wanda Keathly and husband Jimmie of Wylie, TX, Linda Gill and husband Jimmy of Sulphur, and Billy Dawson and wife, Elaine Koonce Dawson of Westlake; seven grandchildren: Jimmie Keathly, Jr., Christopher Keathly, Amy Gill Horton, Charles Gill, Catherine Gill, Julie Gill Arton, and Amanda Dawson; and eleven great-grandchildren: Chelsea, Trenton and Jared Keathly; Grace, Abigail and Olivia Keathly; Jack and Cammie Gill; and David, Christopher and Jacob Arton.
Funeral service will be 10:30am, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Hixson Funeral Home of Westake. Officiating his service will be his grandson, Dr. Chris Keathly and Dr. Wayne McEntire. Visitation will begin Tuesday 5pm-8pm and resume Wednesday 8am until service time. Burial will be in Westlake Memorial Park Cemetery.
