Born in Chislehampton, Oxfordshire to James Clarke and Jane Preston.
He emigrated to the US first in 1857 and, at some time before 1862, he returned to England. He married Leah Bowden Nov 01 1862 in Chislehampton. With their first 3 children, Louise and twins James and Richard, they emigrated to the US in 1867. They lived first in Aurelius and, between 1870 and 1880, they moved to Venice, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
The family name was spelled Clarke in most English records; US records indicate that family members spelled their surname Clark.
