"Bloomington Bridge," by Leonora Whitaker Wood (1890-1989) of Loudoun County, Virginia, is a short narrative concerning the May 1864 battle at Bloomington (Maryland) Bridge (The Piedmont Raid) told from the Confederate perspective.
Bloomington Bridge carries the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad across the Potomac River, two miles west of Piedmont, West Virginia and enabled the delivery of supplies to Federal troops at New Creek and Fort Kelly, West Virginia.
The battle pitted Captain John Hanson McNeill's (1815-1864) "Rangers" against "Mulligan's Jackass Battery."
