Lt. Col. Clay Donald Ellis, U.S. Air Force Retired died February 16, 2004. He was born July 13, 1908 to Claiborne W. and Mylie Anderson Ellis in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College with a degree in Engineering. He was Regimental Commander of his R.O.T.C. unit. Following his graduation he worked as an engineer with Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company in Oklahoma City. Later taught Industrial Arts at Shawnee High School. In 1935 he married Mary Frances Walker. Col. Ellis was called to active duty in July 1941 with the Air Force at Kelly Field where he taught cadets for World War II. He was Director of Ground Training at South Plains Air Base, Lubbock, Texas. Director of Personnel with 5th Air Force in Japan. Served in Korea during the Korean War. Also was with Air Research and Development in Baltimore. Col. Ellis retired from the Strategic Air Command at Dyer Air Base, Texas in April 1961. Following retirement he went into the designing and building of homes. Member of St. Andrews Methodist Church. His awards include National Defense, World War II Japan Occupation, Korean Metal, Bronze Star, American Defense, Military Merit. Survived by wife, Mary Frances, of 68 years; daughter, Molly Ross and son-in-law, George Ross of San Antonio; sister-in-law, Susan Denson and brother-in-law Nimrod Denson of Miami, Florida; brother-in-law, Erwin Walker of Shawnee, Oklahoma. GRAVESIDE SERVICE WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS MONDAY 1:45 P.M. FORT SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL CEMETERY the Chaplain Lt. Col. Bill Bischoff, USAF (Ret), officiating. Arrangements with Porter Loring Mortuary.
