Alfred is the son of Caius and Elizabeth J. (Newman) Thorpe. His father died the same year of Alfred's birth in Whiteside Co., Illinois. He had one brother, Levi N. Thorpe, and a sister, Katherine Minerva Thorpe Law.

He grew up in Whiteside county, and was married to Nellie about 1881.

Alfred was a restaurant keeper in Sterling, Illinois. Later he and Nellie moved to Chicago where he owned a delicatessan.

The couple had one son, George Leroy Thorpe, Sr.
