Magdalene "Maggie" M. Haas, 86, of rural Leland, Illinois passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2005 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born November 20, 1918 in Adams Township, the second of eight children of John and Grace (Gletty) Hann. Maggie graduated from Somonauk High School in 1936 and continued to be active in the alumni association. On June 28, 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, Harvey E. Haas, in Somonauk. During her married life, Maggie worked at the Sip 'n Snack Restaurant and Martin's Food Mart, both in Somonauk, and also at James Knights Co. in Sandwich, along with raising eight children with Harvey on their Centennial Farm west of Somonauk.
Maggie was a faithful volunteer wherever there was a need. Some of those who benefited were her church, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, where she was a devoted member for 86 years and served on many committees, The Sharing Pantry, Valley West Ladies Auxiliary, Willow Crest Nursing Home (where she was awarded Volunteer of the Year), Meals on Wheels, and all of the organizations her children were involved in during their school years, including being named FHA Chapter Mother. Maggie was a 4-H leader for many years, a member of DeKalb County Home Extension and Friends of Alsace. She thoroughly enjoyed working at the Sandwich Fair, playing cards, scrabble and jigsaw puzzles. A talented seamstress, she enjoyed sewing everything from her special baby blankets to several of her daughters' wedding, bridesmaid, prom, and homecoming dresses, and Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren. One of her favorite ways to relax was tending her flower beds.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 24, 2005 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, with Fr. Donald D. DeSalvo officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Dan Hardekopf, Jerry Haas, Bruce Haas, Andrea Hunt, Nicole VeZain, and Mark Baker. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Turner Funeral Home in Somonauk, (815-498-2363) with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Friends of the Marie Olmstead Museum in Somonauk, or to the Open Door in Sandwich.
She is survived by seven children, Margaret Hardekopf, Charles (Darlene) Haas, Thomas Haas, Shirley VeZain, Janet Baker, Linda Melson, all of Somonauk, and Reita (Tom) Hunt of Boulder, CO; two sisters, Marian (Larry) Griswold of Yorkville, and Ginny Hann of Sandwich; three brothers, Jerry (Evelyn) Hann, of Athens, OH, Ron Hann of Gurnee, IL, and Rick Hann of Effingham, IL; three sisters-in-law, Jeanette Hann and Addie Haas of Sandwich, and Ellie Meline of Somonauk; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
