Jessica Anne Wickersham Carter passed away on after a long and valiant battle against brain cancer at the age of 43. Jessica was born to Wendy and Mike Wickersham. In 1970 the family moved to Nevada, living in Las Vegas, Sunnyside, Ely and finally in Elko. Jessica graduated from Elko High School in 1987, and enrolled in the University of Nevada, Reno where she earned a degree in Special Education. She resided in Reno until 1999, when she moved back to Elko, keeping busy as a substitute teacher and as a waitress at the Star Hotel. In 2003, Jessica moved to Las Vegas and accepted a teaching position at Frias Elementary School, where she enjoyed teaching special needs students. In 2004, she met Sean Carter, a Washington, D.C. resident in town visiting family. They were married in Wheaton, Maryland in October of 2005 and made their home in nearby Silver Spring. On her thirty-eighth birthday in 2007, Jessica gave birth to a son, Jacob Scott Carter. Jake was her treasure, and inspired her as she fought through surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments at Johns-Hopkins University Hospital over the last five years of her life.
Jessica enjoyed frequent trips to Oregon and Utah to visit relatives. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary, and was careful to remind family members of those dates each year. She loved being an aunt, and lavished attention on her niece and nephews. Having spent a great deal of time outdoors during her early life, Jessica particularly loved the wide open spaces of Nevada, the smell of wet sagebrush, and the emptiness of the desert. She also had a spiritual bond with the Oregon Coast, where she spent as much time as she could during her trips to the Northwest. Jessica was a lover of dogs, and owned a string of them who developed an extraordinary degree of personality under her constant attention.
Jessica is survived by her husband, Sean, and their son, Jake, of Silver Spring, MD; her mother Wendy (David) Rowell of Dallas, OR; her father Mike (Paula) Wickersham of Sammammish, WA; her brother Mike (Kathy) Wickersham of Montreal, Canada; her brother Tim (Colette) Wickersham, of Elko; nephews Chase (Laura), Josh, and Grant Wickersham of Salt Lake City, UT and Benton and Ryan Wickersham of Elko; and niece Ellen Wickersham of Elko. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Virginia and Scott Wickersham of Medford, OR.
