Richard was born and raised in Mansfield and lived there all of his life, until he was drafted into the Marines 24 April 1968.
Arriving in Vietnam 14 October 1968, Richard was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Dawson River. Alpha Company was on a patrol, when a booby trap was detonated and Richard was wounded by shrapnel in the back, both legs and left arm, at approximately 1055H, 21 kilometers southwest of the Ba Long Airfield. He was med-evac for medical treatment and sent to a USNH in Guam for additional medical treatment, where he died as a result of pulmonary embolus 15 January 1969, as a result of the wounds he sustained 12 June 1968.
Survived by his mother, Beverly Jean Baker Strickland, and his 3 sisters; Madlyn, Sandra, Rochelle and 2 brothers; Bert and Jack Baker, all of 605 Stocking Avenue, Mansfield, Ohio and his father; Thomas Leroy Baker of Mansfield, Ohio.
