He was born in Columbia, SC, a son of Mary Owen Fort and the late Dr. James A. Fort, Jr.
James served his country in the US Marines where he earned the rank of sergeant. He was a certified commercial pilot and the former owner of Fort Aviation and Crop Dusting of Mayesville, SC.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Fort of Beaufort, SC; his former wife, Betty Wright Fort of Columbia, SC; two children, Joseph Michael Fort and Alizabeth Fort Driggers, both of Columbia, SC; three brothers, Thomas, Donald, and William Fort, all of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, River Driggers, J.R. Fort, Michaela Driggers, Alicia Watkins, Joanna Fort, and Savannah Fort.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 5 p.m. at the Irmo Church of God in Irmo, SC, officiated by Bishop Randy Caulder and The Reverend Tom Quick.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
