James Eldon Elder, 77, of Grants Pass died Friday, Sept. 5, 1997, at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Grants Pass, with the Rev. Ernie Yaconelli officiating. Interment will follow at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.

Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Aug. 21, 1920, at Mansfield, Mo., and grew up in Fort Scott, Kan. On Jan. 2, 1944, in Wichita, Kan., he married Doris J. Wallace, who survives. For a number of years, they farmed in western Kansas, later moving to Hayward, Calif., where he began a job as a mechanic with United Airlines. They came to Grants Pass from Hayward in 1982.

Elder was a member of First Baptist Church. He loved gardening and everything mechanical.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Charlana Elder of Canyon City, Colo., and Martha Wring of Monterey, Calif.; a son, Courtney Elder of Castro Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Jess Elder of Port Angeles, Wash., and Joe Elder of Ottawa, Kan.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
