The New Leaf - Effingham, Kansas - 14 Jan 1916, Fri - Page 3
The sad news of the death of Mrs. John Burns, at 7 o'clock yesterday morning was a shock to her many friends. As was stated elsewhere in this issue, a still-born baby was born to Mrs. Burns Sunday , and her condition has been critical ever since. Mary Murphy was born 45 years ago in Atchison. In 1893 she was married in St. Mary's church at Purcell to John Burns, and they have resided in the vicinity of Effingham ever since, at their present home for eighteen years. Mrs. Burns was a devout Christian devoted to her religion, a splendid wife, kind and loving mother, a good neighbor, always in sickness and trouble a tireless worker. Besides her husband and mother Mrs. Mary Murphy of Atchison, she is survived by eleven children, the oldest 21 years of age, and all are at home. They are Willie, Anna, Nellie, Lucy, Loretta, Mary, James, Leo, Catharine, Ruth and Paul. Anna is a graduate of A. C. H. S is now teaching. Nellie and Lucy are students of the high school. Funeral arrangements will not made until relatives are heard from, but services will probably be held Saturday at St. Ann's church.
