Barbara was the daughter of Mildred Fern Humeston Carlson and Carl Thorvald Carlson. She graduated from Rockford West High School in 1948. She then went to Bradley University in Peoria where she graduated in 1952.

She married Richard Martin "Dick" Tunks on Feb. 19, 1956 in Peoria, Illinois at West Bluff Christian Church. Together, they raised four children, Dawn (John) Milton, Rose (Greg) Moroz, Linda (Mike) Owens and Daron (LaShann Lindsey) Tunks.

Once her children were in school, she returned to Bradley and worked at the library for 32 years. Her favorite part of the job was helping students and faculty, and she often baked birthday cakes for student employees.

Barbiedoll, as her kids lovingly called her, loved to bake, play the piano and sing. She was also a huge supporter of Dick's work at Common Place, an inner city ministry started in 1967 to help fight social injustices in Peoria.

She is also survived by her 16 grandchildren, Jessee, Ian, Spencer, Sami, Katarena, Ana, Conor, Reilly, Liam, Griffin, Tyshell, Kevin, Jade, Deja, Daron and Jaron; and three great-grandchildren, Maliyah, Shyla and Jhase. She is also survived by one brother, Larry (Sally) Carlson; and two brothers-in-law, Harold (Ethel) Tunks and Bert Tunks; plus 13 nieces and nephews.

Her parents; infant sister, Margaret; husband, Dick; and sister-in-law, Gert Tunks, preceded her in death.
