Because of his Railroad job (considered critically important for the economy), Arthur was exempt from military service during World War II. Arthur and Virginia had 3 daughters:

Arthur battled leukemia in the last few years of his life, and eventually succumbed to the disease on May 14, 1982 at the age of 68. His wife Virginia lived another 18 years, passing away on January 23, 2000.
