U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born in Hanover County, Virginia, he was a successful farmer when appointed a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1812-15). In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress, serving until 1817. After his term, he resumed his farming interest and was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Richard E. Parker, serving (1837-41). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he continued farming until his death at age 57.
