Charles E. Ammon, 79, a lifelong resident of Ammon Road, husband of the late Edna, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013, at Lewis Co. General Hospital, Lowville, after a long illness.
He was born in the Town of Lewis, on March 14, 1933, a son of Eugene and Loretta Smith Ammon. Charlie graduated from West Leyden High School, with the Class of 1952; in March, 1953, he entered the U.S. Army, where he served in Alaska, during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged with the rank of CPL, on March 4, 1955, at Camp Kilmer, NJ. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1961.
For many years Mr. Ammon was employed in road and bridge construction throughout central New York, for Union Local 545, of Syracuse, retiring in the late 1980's as heavy equipment supervisor. In the early 1980's he was employed as a crane supervisor at the construction site of the 9 Mile Point Nuclear Power Plant, near Oswego; from 1984-86, Charlie was employed in the construction of the Lyons Falls Hydro Power Plant on the Black River as head personnel supervisor. Of the many construction projects that he was employed on, this project on the Black River was his favorite.
On August 1, 1964, Charles was united in marriage with Edna Perry, at the First Presbyterian Church of Rome. Mrs. Ammon, a retired cafeteria employee for Adirondack Central School System, died on December 14, 1978.
Mr. Ammon was a member of the West Leyden Fire Department and a member of the Little Roaring Brook Hunting Club, of the Town of Lewis.
He greatly enjoyed hunting, local speedway auto racing, snowmobiling and tinkering with engines and snowmobiles in his garage. He was the happiest when he was teaching his grandsons mechanical skills in his garage, as well as attending the sporting events and dance recitals of his granddaughter Emily.
Charlie is survived by one daughter and son in law, Linda S. and Murray Lee, Boonville, one son, Eugene E. Ammon, West Leyden, three grandchildren, Emily Lee, Trevor and Tyler Ammon and nieces and nephews. The last of his family, he was predeceased by three sisters, Betty Dutch, Marie LaPlante Zimmer and Shirley Frederick.
His Funeral will be Monday at 10:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Rev. Laurie Percival Pauley, pastor of the Floyd and Stittville United Methodist Churches will officiate. Interment will be in West Leyden Cemetery in the spring.
