John Decker was a hard-working man. From an early age, John supported himself, more or less, and because of this he had very little formal schooling. According to Aunt Alice, his education came from the School of Hard Knocks! His father had disappeared before his birth, and his mother had little means of support until she remarried - much of the time, John supported himself and his mother. In 1898, when he was fifteen years old, John went to work for Mark Roe in the lumber business. He remained employed there for the next eight years until 1906, a little over a year after he and Anna Olney were married. At the age of 22 and 19, respectively, John and Anna were married in 1905.

In 1906, a year after he married Anna Olney, John Decker took a job working for Frank Snow in Caroline Center. It was here, in Caroline Center, Tompkins County, New York, where the little Decker family grew as four children were born into this happy home.

John was a small man of stature, standing about 5'9, with a slim physique. According to my father, his Dad worked too hard to ever get fat! He had a good head of black hair, and was clean-shaven. As a married man, he always worked on farms and eventually took over the Hildebrant farm on Snyder Hill for shares. John Decker was a self-made and peaceful man who knew how to farm the land. He was very adaptive and could conquer most tasks he encountered. Although his sons grew up to be avid huntsman, John never took to hunting down animals. In truth, he never even owned a gun. He did, however, share with his sons his love of sports of the outdoors.
