Evan Jones East was born on 20 September 1846 in Calvin township, Cass County, Michigan, son of William East and Mary Lundy. Evan's mother died in December 1846, when he was only a few months old. He attended public schools in Cass county. On 19 June 1850, Evan lived with his father, stepmother, and half brother in Calvin township. His father worked as a master carpenter while Evan had attended school in the previous year. On 19 June 1860, Evan was attending school while living with his parents and brother E. V. in Calvin.

Evan was married on 19 September 1869 to Lucy H. Wright. Lucy was born on 16 June 1848 in Grant County, Indiana, daughter of William Wright and Hannah Gauntt.

On 13 June 1870, the couple lived next door to Lucy's parents in Calvin, Cass County, Michigan. Evan was working in a woolen mill while Lucy kept house. Evan continued to work in a woolen mill for three years after his marriage and then went to Kansas, staying for one summer. He returned to Michigan and then moved to Grant County, Indiana, where he lived for two years. He returned to Cass County in the fall of 1876.

On 5 June 1880, Evan and Lucy lived with son Lloyd at Penn, Cass County, Michigan. The Easts transferred from the Penn Monthly Meeting, Cass County, Michigan, to the Long Lake Friends Church in 1884. On 28 April 1885, Evan, who was living in Blair township, purchased 40 acres in Section 18 from Simeon D. Lillee for $400. On the same day Evan and Lucy sold another 40 acres in Section 18 to Lillee for $1000. The Easts returned to Cass County for two years before moving to Long Lake.

Evan was elected Clerk in April 1892. He was beginning his spring plowing at the same time. Granddaughter Verna stayed with Evan and Lucy in January 1900. They couple were often visited by their son Lloyd in 1900. Evan was elected Treasurer of Long Lake township that year. He was also building a barn in May. The couple had company from Silver Lake that month. He was reported to be improving his place in September 1900 at about the time Mr. Wright of Traverse City visited. On 29 June 1900, the couple, their son William, and Lucy's father William Wright were listed as living on a farm in Long Lake township. Evan was a Republican for much of his life, but joined the Prohibition Party in 1900.

On 23 April 1910, the Easts farmed in Long Lake township. Lucy died on 3 May 1911 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery:

Passed Away at Her Home at Long Lake Last Night
Mrs. E. J. East, aged 62 years, died at her home in Long Lake township last night after a lingering illness. Mrs. East had lived in this region for twenty years, where she had always won and held the high regard of all with whom she came in contact. The husband, two sons, and a number of grandchildren survive.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 o'clock from the Friends church, at Long Lake. Rev. Carter of this city officiating.

Evan was married to Helen (Sill) Hannaford on 7 September 1913 in Traverse City. Austice M. Harvey, a minister, conducted the ceremony, which was witnessed by Ida and Joseph Hewitt of Traverse City. Helen was born in July 1840 in New York, daughter of Alfert Sill and Mercy Daily. She had been previously married on 17 November 1857 in McHenry County, Illinois to Charles Hannaford. Charles was born in February 1836 in Ohio.

On 22 August 1860, Charles and "Ellen" lived in Cherry Valley, Winnebago County, Illinois with their daughter Ida and an 11-year-old girl, Emily Dunwell. Charles worked as a farm laborer. On 17 June 1870, the couple and their four children- Ida, Minnie, Lyman, and Edna- lived in Elmwood township, Leelanau County on a farm valued at $2,000. On 10 June 1880, the couple and six children- Minnie, Lyman, Edna, Frank, Charles, and Ray- lived in Solon township, Leelanau County on a farm. Daughter Minnie worked as a teacher. On 1 June 1900, Charles and Helen lived at 1403 S. Union Street in Traverse City with two sons, Roy and Albert, and a grandson Martha Heuitt. The two sons worked as day laborers. Charles died in 1907 in Grand Traverse County. On 18 April 1910, Helen lived with her son Roy and daughter-in-law Laura at 1403 S. Union Street. Roy worked as an attendant at the insane asylum.

Helen died in 1915 in Grand Traverse County. Evan joined the Free M.E. Church in Traverse City in 1916. That same year he was married in Grand Traverse County to Emma (Sanborn) Whaley. Emma was born in January 1858 in Michigan (f=NH, m=VT). She had been married circa 1883/1884 to Thomas W. Whaley. Thomas was born in August 1848 in Canada. On 20 June 1900, Thomas and Emma lived in Blair township, Grand Traverse County with their four children- Roy, Amos, Ida, and Frank. Thomas died in 1910 in Grand Traverse County.

On 14 January 1920, Evan lived with his wife Emma and her three children by her previous marriage- Lynn Whaley, Frank Whaley, and Florence Whaley- at the house he owned at 1023 Cass Street in Traverse City. Evan was still working as a farmer. Lynn worked as a salesman in a hardware store, Frank was at a printer's office, and Florence was a saleslady at a dry goods store. Evan died sometime between 1920 and 1930.

On 17 April 1930, Emma was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Eric and Florence Baesch at 1009 E. 8th Street in Traverse City.

Emma died on 13 September 1944 in Grand Traverse County.

Evan and Emma are buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

Evan and Lucy (Wright) East were the parents of two children:

i. Lloyd E. East was born in September 1872 in Cass County, Michigan.
ii. El Roy William East was born on 25 July 1881 in Penn, Cass County, Michigan.
