Fourth Of July Tragedy

Amherst Boy Killed While Exploding Fire Crackers

While exploding fire crackers near a pail of blasting powder, on July 4, Walter Lassen, of North Amherst, was killed, his brother Frank was severly burned, and a playmate named George Cignet was so badly injured that his life was put in danger.

The Lassen boys, aged 8 and 12 with young Hignet, aged 14, were exploding fire crackers and a small cannon. For the cannon they used blasting powder, the pail containing four or five pounds of the stuff. The boys were careless with the powder leaving the cover off the pail. Walter Lassen sat on he ground with the pail between his legs, and his older brother was quite near. Young Hignet came up with a fire cracker which had refused to go off, and he broke it in two and lit it in the center. Sparks fell into the pail of powder and it exploded.

Walter Lassen's face and body was terribly burned and torn, resulting in his death. Young Hignet's face and upper part of his body were seriously burned. Frank Lassen was badly burned in his attempt to tear the clothing from his brother.
