He served in the US Army and the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. Fred was a welder and had helped build the Rath Packing Plant in Columbus Junction and then worked there for 26 years and continued working for the IBP plant, retiring when he was 67.
Fred was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He coached Little League for many years and was very involved with 4H and wrestling with his kids and grandchildren. He was honored as TOPS King for the State of Iowa and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, yodeling, playing the harmonica, and attending the county and state fairs.
His family includes his wife, Vonnie; a daughter, Carrie & Lonny Hansford of Letts; five sons, Craig & Tammy Carlson of Columbus Junction, Kent, Cory, Kevin, and Kurt Carlson all of Wapello; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Mae Lotz of Dover, Delaware. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Geraldine Green; 3 brothers, George, Gerald, and Jim Carlson; and a great grandson, Tyson.
The funeral for Fred Carlson will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Pastor Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
A Memorial Fund has been established with portions to benefit the Wapello Wrestling and the Louisa County 4H.
