Co H
103 Ohio Infantry
∼Samuel volunteered for civil War army service by enlisting in the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 13, 1862, in Lorain County. His name is not in the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers because he drowned while swimming in the Black River between his enlistment and reporting for duty at Camp Cleveland Ohio. He would have served in Company H. His military headstone is in the photo to the right of the Fields Cemetery sign.
He was never mustered in hso has no military service record and should not have been able to get a government headstone. The question is, how did he qualify for it?
Neither he nor any family members appear in the 1850 or 1860 U.S. Census listings for Lorain County Ohio.
