Howard R. "Spike" Burgess, 61, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011 at his home. He was born Sept. 15, 1949 in Keokuk, the son of Elmer and Mildred Thompson Burgess. He married Vickie Blaise on April 30, 1976. She preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 2001. He later married Kathy Thorn Spraggins on May 29, 2010. She survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Brenda (husband Kenny) Witte of Rock Island, Ill.; two step-sons, Wayne Robert Hays of Warsaw, Ill. and Billy Joe Hays of Keokuk; His mother, Mildred Burgess of Keokuk; nine brothers, Robert (wife Wanda) McGee of Wyoming, Jessie McGee and Kevin McGee both of Lockridge, Danny (wife Linda) Burgess, Rick (wife Sue) Burgess and John (wife Bobette) Burgess all of Keokuk, Richard Burgess and Elmer Ray Burgess of Alexandria, Mo. and Charles (wife Clara) Stroud of the Quad Cities, six sisters, Annie (husband Earl) Vermeesch, Mary (husband Jackie) McGee, Thelma McGee of Keokuk, Kim (husband Phil) Korschgen of Keokuk, Jeanne (husband Wesley) Denning of Kahoka, and Sally Bennett of Keokuk; eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one son, Howard Burgess II; one sister, Ellen McGee; and his father, Elmer Burgess on Feb. 14, 2011.
He had been employed at Feinberg's in Fort Madison, for 18 years, retiring in 2010.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with Robin Korschgen officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be held after 1 p.m., Friday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with family meeting with friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice.
