Shirley (Sacks) Friedman

Shirley Florence Friedman (nee Sacks), a musician and writer who was active with community organizations, died Jan. 10 to Duke Ellington's "Take the ‘A' Train." She was 91.
An Akron native, Mrs. Friedman married her childhood sweetheart, and the couple later moved to Beachwood, where they raised three sons and contributed to the growth of the city and its Jewish community. The couple led Jewish National Fund trips to Israel and were honored by the organization.
Mrs. Friedman was involved with the Beachwood schools, Beachwood Arts Council, Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, American Jewish Congress and American Civil Liberties Union. A writer of original songs, song parodies and verse for Cleveland Jewish occasions, she played piano by ear, sang and had a prodigious memory for American standard ballads, jazz songs and musical theater. She was a member of the original writing team for the Cleveland "Jewish Scene" radio program.
An avid reader, Mrs. Friedman had other interests and a book collection numbering into the thousands. A liberal Democrat and activist, she was passionate about Jewish culture, politics, equal rights for women and minorities, and an end to all war.
During the years Mrs. Friedman's children were growing up, the household bustled with activity. She opened her basement to weightlifting, pingpong, rock band practice and boxing matches. Her yard became a football field, and her refrigerator became a concession stand. She bore an all-male family culture with mostly good nature and kept a handyman on retainer for household damage.
Mrs. Friedman was predeceased by her husband, Harvey E. She is survived by her sons, Rabbi Yehoshua (Janet) of Kochav Ha Shachar, Israel, Eric (Debbie) and Ron (Sue); 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and sister, Naomi Christman.
Services will be held Sunday January 13 at 3PM at the BERKOWITZ-KUMIN-BOOKATZ MEMORIAL CHAPEL 1985 S. Taylor Rd., Cleveland Hts. Interment Bet Olam Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the residence of Debbie and Eric Friedman, 3249 Somerset Dr., Beachwood, SUNDAY FOLLOWING SERVICES UNTIL 9PM, MONDAY 2-4PM & 7-9PM.
