He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Spr Walker was killed by small arms fire from a member of the Afghan National Army while working on a construction task at Patrol Base Hazrat in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. Six injured soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment.
Aged 23, he was born in Leeds and lived in Washington, Sunderland. He worked as a technician for Vauxhall before joining the Army in July 2008. After basic training, he completed his Phase Two Combat Engineer Training and trade training as a driver. He joined his first unit, 28 Engineer Regiment in Hameln, Germany in September 2009, and deployed to Canada and Kenya on major exercises. His Troop, from 42 Field Squadron, was attached to 73 Armoured Engineer Squadron for Operation Herrick 17 and deployed to Afghanistan in September 2012. Called a shining star by his troop commander, Spr Walker was lauded for his hard work and professionalism. Richie, as he was known to friends, will be remembered for his charisma and team spirit. He was also an avid football fan who played for the regimental squad and had ambitions to take up boxing on his return from the tour.
Spr Walker leaves behind his family including his beloved young daughter Lilly-Faith. The family's tribute said, "Richard held two things close to his heart – his daughter and his colleagues in the Army. A proud, patriotic man, he died doing a job he loved, supporting his friends."
Funeral with full military honours was held on January 30, 2013 at Our Blessed Lady Immaculate Roman Catholic Church, Washington Village.
