Son of F. Carl & Elizabeth Porter. Grandson of Catherine Purnell Davis who was the great-great-grandaughter of Jehu Davis, ninth Governor of Delaware.

Family moved back to father's home town of Greenwood abt 1927. Grew up in Greenwood, graduated from Greenwood HS.
Attended the University of Delaware 1940-1943, studying Engineering when he left to join the Army Air Corp. Attained 2nd Lieutenant. His name is on the plaque on the mall in Newark.
Flew in the 8th Air Force, 359th Fighter Group, 370 Fighter Squadron, based at East Wretham Field, Norfolk, England. Initially assigned a P-47D, transferring to a P-51B in April of 1944. While escorting bombers on a raid on Brunswick, Germany he was shot down/KIA on May 8, 1944 in a P-51 3 km west of Hambuehren, District Celle, Germany. He was buried that day in the community cemetary of Winsen/Aller in the district of Celle (grave no. 9, north side of cemetary). Notably, the war dept listed him as MIA and told his family the same for several months before releasing that he he was KIA, a fact they knew within a week of his being shot down.
Re-interred about 1960 in Henlopen Memorial Park.
