Thurman T. Payne Sr., 92, of the Dow Community, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at his home. Born Feb. 8, 1920, in Enterprise, he was the son of James M. and Otis (Floyd) Payne. He was one of 11 children. He joined the United States Army in 1938 and served in the European Theatre during World War II. He met Kathleen White in a café in Abilene, Texas, in 1941 were she worked while he was stationed at Camp Barkley, Texas. They were married on May 1, 1942, in Ardmore. She remained stateside until he returned at the end of the war. He served seven years in the army and was honorably discharged in 1945. After a short time he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. They traveled to, and lived in, Africa, Japan and several other countries before returning to the United States in 1958. The family came to McAlester in 1961 when he retired from the Air Force and moved to Dow in 1962, where he was engaged in ranching. He also worked at Oklahoma State Penitentiary from February 1962 to May 1984. He was a member of Dow Methodist Church. He enjoyed his ranch and loved spending time with animals. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thurman "Tim" Payne Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Dow; daughter, Linda Darlene Schiller and husband, "Chick," of Ponca City; brother, Claude Payne, of Topeka, Kan.; grandchildren, Matthew Payne and Myssy, of Wilburton, and Dawn Ivey and husband, David, of Hartshorne, and great-grandson, Daxton Payne, of Wilburton. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathleen Payne; brothers, Groover, Vester, Edgar, twin brother, Herman, and Jay, and sisters, Ruth, Ethel, Elzie and Letha. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Brumley-Mills Chapel in Hartshorne with the Rev. Kenneth Morrow officiating. Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098 of McAlester. Burial will be at Bache-Red Oak Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of Hartshorne. Pallbearers will be Terry Thorton, Jeff Black, Rocky Johnson, Greg Sims, David Ivey and Quincy Powell.
