He was born on February 18, 1925 in Macomb to Perry G. and Lucy E. Lance Heffner. He married Janice Cobb on May 28, 1949 in McDonough County. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Leslie (Barbara) Heffner of Rushville; four grandchildren, Amber Heffner and friend, Carey Nicholson, Corrie (Gus) Park, Jamie (Michael) Heffner-DeWitt and Lesley (John) LaRock; seven great-grandchildren, Alexis Heffner-Taylor, Lance Heffner-Taylor, Jarred Cale, Carson Park, Reese Park, Ellie Heffner-DeWitt and Anisten LaRock; one brother, Bob (Elaine) Heffner of Industry and one sister, Betty Hillyer of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son in infancy and one sister, Maxine Heffner.
Bill lived in Industry for 59 years before moving to Macomb in 2011. He was president of Littleton Elevator for 37 years before his retirement. He was on the Industry Fire Department for 50 years and served as fire chief for 25 years. He was on the Rushville State Bank Board for 27 years and the MDH board for 18 years.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the American Legion for 55 years.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. With Reverend Robert Green officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Industry Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Industry Cemetery, Wesley Village Benevolent Fund or MDH Hospice.
