Thomas Bartow, son of Rev John Bartow, was born at Westchester, October 22, 1709; his father bequeathed him 1,100 acres of land in Monmouth Co, New Jersey, all his Greek and Latin books, and his watch. He removed to New Jersey in early life, and settled in Amboy, where he practised law. In 1735, he became clerk of the Supreme and Chancery Courts, and clerk of Assembly in 1741. During Lord Stirling's absence in Europe, he became Surveyor-General of East Jersey, and, in 1762, clerk of the Surveyor-General's office.

At the breaking out of the war of the Revolution, he went to reside with his son, Thomas, who lived in Philadelphia, and made his will, May 12, 1779. He died at Bethlehem, PA, December 3, 1782, and was buried in the graveyard of the Moravian Church, separated, however, from the main body of graves, not being a member of the Moravian Church. The marble slab to mark the spot is about 16 by 24 inches, tolerably white, and the inscription in very good order, as follows, as copied by myself, August 20, 1876:

Thomas Bartow
born Oct 22nd
1709

York State
Depart Dec 3d
