The prominent Casper attorney and former mayor who was facing child pornography possession charges was found dead Monday.

According to Natrona County Coroner Connie Jacobson, Larry Clapp died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. By late Monday afternoon, officials were notifying family members.

Clapp's death comes three months after the former Casper mayor and state legislator was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography.

Clapp was a Casper attorney and worked for Clapp Ochs PC law firm until shortly after his arrest. His name disappeared from the website the day after his initial appearance.

Clapp additionally served on the Casper City Council, was mayor in 1988, and was a member of the Wyoming State House of Representatives from 1978-79. He was married and had one daughter.

Clapp's Oct. 3 arrest was the result of a months-long investigation after his IP address was flagged as a candidate for files containing child pornography.

According to the arrest affidavit, officials executed a search warrant and found more than 100 movie files related to child porn on Clapp's hard drive.

Since his initial appearance on Oct. 4, Clapp's name has scarcely graced the courtroom. The attorney waived his preliminary hearing Nov. 29 and an arraignment that was scheduled last month was cancelled.

According to Natrona County District Court officials, the next activity slated in the Clapp case was an order for both parties to file written status reports by Friday.
