He was son of Reese A. Gillespie & Sally Hanshew Gillespie. He was a farmer. He married Margaret Ann Custer, Nov. 25, 1874, in Smyth County, Virginia. They moved to Schuyler County, Illinois in abt. 1883, near Huntsville. They returned to Virginia once, but came back to Huntsville to live. They had six children: Sarah Ovelle b.1875; Henry Smith b.1877; George Everett Madon b.1879; Maude Mae b.1882; Edna Virginia b.1884; William Edgar (Little Willie) b.1888.
