MARBLEHEAD -- Funeral services for John E. Giles, II, of 88 Pleasant St., 19 year old Massachusetts Maritime Academy midshipman who died after a fall Saturday, will be held in St. Michael's Episcopal Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Waterside Cemetery.

Giles was fatally injured in a 30 foot fall from the Academy's training ship, the U.S.S. Bay State, off the Cape while climbing hand over hand on a line attached to the ship's bow. He fell into a motorship tied alongside the vessel.

Taken to Tobey Hospital, Wareham, for emergency surgery, he died about four hours later.

He was the son of a Marblehead businessman and descendant of one of the city's oldest families. His grandfather, for whom he was named, was the last sea captain of the former Massachusetts Humane Society, a lifelong group of volunteers located in coastal communities.

A graduate of Marblehead High School in 1958, he was a baseball star there and at the academy. He also played the trombone in an amateur musical group called the "Jive Five" during his high school days. A major in engineering at the academy, he was considered an excellent student.

He leaves his parents, Carl E. and Gertrude (Snowden) Giles; and a brother, Anthony, 16, a Marblehead High School junior.
