Funeral Services Held on Saturday For J.B. Avery, Local Jeweler

Funeral services for Joseph Bruce Avery, 77, well known business man, were held Saturday November 25, at 2:30 p.m. from the Emmerich Funeral home, Rev. J.W. Parks of the Congregational church officiated and burial was in Crownhill cemetery. Amherst businessmen closed their stores from 2:30 to 3:30 in reverence of their former associate.

Mr. Avery died on Wednesday November 22 at his late residence, 465 Park ave., following a nine month illness.

Born in Wellington on May 16, 1873, he lived there for a number of years and learned the watch repair business from his uncle. After coming to Amherst he set up a repair bench in the old post office on Church street. Later he moved his shop to the present location.

When he celebrated his Golden Jubilee in 1994, he had repaired over 20,000 watches. He was widely known as an expert watch repairman and as a skilled engraver.

Mr. Avery was a charter member of the Amherst Businessmen's Association, the Amherst Aerie of Eagles and the Amherst Knights of Pythias lodge. He was also a member of Stonington Lodge of Masons and attended the Congregational church. For 35 years he served as clerk of the board of education before retiring from that position in 1939. His name is included on the memorial stone on the present school building which was built in 1907 during the early part of his tenure of office.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Radde, Amherst; one son, Clare E. Avery; San Francisco, California; one grandchild; one great grandchild; two brothers, Howard of Brownhelm and Harry of Oberlin.

Mrs. Avery and Mrs. Radde plan to continue with jewelry business for a while.
