Jack N. Hendrickson Sr. joined his wife, Doris "Sis" (Eaton) Hendrickson, on Jan. 5, 2013, at Denali Care Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
He was born July 18, 1927, in Ritchie Country, West "By God" Virginia to Flo and Kenneth Hendrickson.
After joining the Navy in 1944, he married his childhood sweetheart Doris. They had three children, Pamela, Jack Jr., and Stanley Sr. During her stay at Pioneers Home with Alzheimer's, he visited Doris every day for six-and-a-half years after caring for her alone at home for four years.
His curiosity in life in general led him to many things, including moving to Fairbanks in 1975 with his wife, his lifelong membership to the NRA, and a full-spirited dedication to being a Mason, which would help define and sculpt his personality. Jack was a very simple, happy, upstanding citizen and family member. He wholeheartedly knew his opinions and stood behind them 100 percent no matter what, and the same went for his hobbies. An avid outdoorsman, he spent any time he could eke out, fishing on the lakes and rivers first of West Virginia, then of Alaska.
Tightly knitting together a large family built primarily on love, trust and hard work, Jack was the ultimate good ole country boy, with morals and standards he raised his children and grandchildren with. His primary interests included music, fishing, hunting, reading and collecting (mostly coins but many other things as well). Praised as an accomplished fiddler, his music filled our souls. At the age of 7 he began learning the songs of the hills passed down from his great uncle that sustained him and brought him great joy and solace. The day he went into the hospital he played his fiddle. His music will linger on, in our hearts and memories with the stomp of our feet and the clap of our hands!
If you had a moment he had a story and would weave tales of long ago, his childhood during the Depression, his service in the U.S. Navy, adventures in the woods and on the waters and his sobriety. He had been sober for 40 years. He never forgot his roots and was so grateful for all the wonderful people in his life. He truly loved the uniqueness of each individual who had a part in shaping his journey. He was generous with anything he owned and opened his home to friends who were dying or others who just needed a place stay for a short while.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris "Sis" Evelyn; his grandchildren, Jedediah, and Josiah Hendrickson; and great-grandchild, Damien Hendrickson.
He is survived by daughter, Pamela Throop and husband, Robert Parr; son, Jack Hendrickson Jr. and wife, Becky; son, Stanley Hendrickson and wife, Peggy; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be a viewing at Chapel of Chimes on Illinois Street in Fairbanks from 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a reception at 7 p.m. at Fairbanks Snowmachine Fun Lions Club, 3950 Lakeview Drive, Fairbanks, Alaska.
