English Royalty. Born the second daughter of Edward IV, King of England and Elizabeth Woodville at Windsor Castle. She was invested as a Lady Companion, Order of the Garter in 1480. She died at age 14 at Greenwich Palace, Greenwich, London. Mary was also known as Princess Mary of York. Her famous siblings were Elizabeth of York, Cecily of York, Margaret of York, Richard of Shrewsbury the first Duke of York, Anne of York, George Plantagenet the Duke of Bedford, Catherine and Bridget of York. The family name Plantagenet was rarely actually used, being first adopted by the public for his eighth great grandfather, Geoffrey, who wore a sprig of broom greenery in his hat and established the Plantagenet line. Mary was the second of ten children, and the second of seven daughters. She was born at Windsor Castle, and was sponsored by Archbishop, Lord Chancellor Cardinal Thomas Bouchier, the medieval version of a godfather. There was apparently an offer of marriage from John (Hans) of Denmark, the future King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but he married another in 1478. Mary was invested as a Lady of the Garter in 1480, along with her sister, Cecily. Mary died at the young age of fourteen at Greenwich, and was buried at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. In 1789, workers discovered a small chamber adjoining that of her parent's vault. It is believed to hold the remains of Mary and her brother George. who died at the age of two.
