Joseph Franklin "Joe" Swanay, 89, of the Clear Springs community, died Monday at Johnson City Medical Center.

After 24 years as maintenance supervisor for the Greene County School System, he became a full-time farmer on his farm, Clear View Farm.

He was a director of the Greene County Farmers Mutual Insurance Co.

Mr. Swanay was a member and had served as president and in numerous offices of the Clear Springs Ruritan Club. He was recently honored as a charter member.

His family stated, "Joe was a devout Christian serving his Lord as a member of Clear Springs Chapel United Methodist Church.

"He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and loved to spend time with his family."

Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Barbara Burchette Swanay; a daughter and son-in-law: Donna Faye and Retired Col. Jim Love of Florida; a son and daughter-in-law: Donald E. and Debbie Swanay; his grandchildren and their spouses: Jeff and Gwyneth Love of Virginia, Brett and Jenn Love, Jamie Swanay, and Christy and Adam Tackett, all of North Carolina, David Swanay, Allen Harris, Andrew and Brittany Harris, and Danielle and Chris Purkey; a "devoted" sister-in-law: Gaynelle Ball; a sister-in-law: Cleo Swanay of Kingsport; his brothers-in-law and their wives: Everette and Frances Burchette and Harold and Scottie Burchette; his nieces: Karen Bowman of Florida and Wanda Fugate and Nancy Platt, both of Kingsport; and his special cousins: Edna Miller, Georgia Shanks, Alma Shelton, Junior Gibson, and Joan McDonald.

He was a son of the late W.M. and Alpha Swanay and was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Swanay.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Jeffers Mortuary.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 8 o'clock in the mortuary chapel. The Rev. Susan Anderson and the Rev. Vince Krauss will officiate.

A committal service will be held at 10:30 Friday morning in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Clear Springs Chapel and Clear Springs Ruritan Club, Dale Armstrong, Hal Bowers, Tony Bird, Norman Mitchell, and William Carter.
