Caption for his photo from the book, Black America Series, Columbia South Carolina, by Vennie Deas-Moore, Arcadia Publishing, 2000, page 11: Robert John Palmer was born on January 18, 1849 (note the conflict with the DOB found in the notebook). Palmer served in the House of Representatives from 1876 to 1878 and conducted a business as a merchant tailor on Main Street opposite the old Post Office. Palmer owned property in Washington, D.C. and Columbia.

The posted obituary was found in the Palmetto Leader 12 May 1928. Notice the conflict of place of burial with the book referenced below.
